There are two categories of high-performance machines and M models developed by BMW M. One is the M High Performance model that can run on the circuit, and the other is the M Performance model that feeds back the technology cultivated on the circuit and improves the driving performance. The M4 CSL to be released this time is positioned as an M high performance model.
The BMW M4 is a high-performance model with overwhelming driving performance on the circuit while having a beautiful flowing roofline peculiar to the coupe model. The M4 CSL is based on this M4 (competition RWD model), with a weight reduction of approximately 100kg and an output improvement of 40ps. It is the fastest BMW mass-produced model, achieving a lap time of 7 minutes 20 seconds 207 on the Nürburgring North Course. The name CSL comes from the initials of “Competition”, “Sport” and “Lightweight”.
The power unit is based on a 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine equipped with M4 and boosted from 1.7bar to 2.1bar. Maximum output has been increased to 550ps, an increase of 40ps compared to the base model.
The chassis has 14 ball joints, an increase of 4, to improve road surface followability, camber strength, and damper response. In addition, special suspension and stabilizer, red high gloss M carbon ceramic brakes are standard equipment, demonstrating the ultimate driving performance on the circuit.
For the exterior, CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) is used for the bonnet, trunk lid, kidney grille, air inlet, door mirror cap, diffuser, etc. In addition to achieving weight reduction, it has achieved an appearance with a strong presence. Lighting is equipped with laser lights with yellow daylights and rear combination lamps that use laser technology. The trunk lid and other model batches are black with red accents to create a special feeling.
The interior is impressive with a design reminiscent of the racing scene. It uses an M Alcantara steering wheel with a center mark, M carbon fiber trim, and a dedicated CFRP center console. The seat uses an M carbon full bucket seat that is lightweight to the limit. Considering the use in the race scene, it is compatible with 6-point seat belts and has been devised so that the headrest does not get in the way even when wearing a helmet. In addition, there is no rear seat for weight reduction, and instead it is a storage space for helmets and other items.
