On June 23, Seiko will release four limited edition Seiko watches from the Presage Craftsmanship series to commemorate the 110th anniversary. It is a special model that pays homage to the ancestors who have led Japan manufacturing, and expresses them using the techniques of the traditional industries “enamelware”, “lacquer”, “Arita porcelain”, and “cloisonne” that have developed together with the local community.
In order to emphasize the beauty of the dial using traditional crafts, the design is designed with an emphasis on comfort and classical taste based on Seiko’s watchmaking history, such as an irregular layout with alternating Roman numerals and indexes, and a simple case shape that fits comfortably on the wrist. For the straps, we are conscious of making sustainable products, such as using leather produced by LWG (Leather Working Group) certified tanners.

There are four types of enamelware dials, lacquer dials, Arita porcelain dials, and cloisonne dials, all of which are waterproof to daily life at 10 bar in a stainless steel case. The movement is powered by Seiko’s automatic 6R24 calibre. The number of Cloisonne dials produced is limited to 800 pieces worldwide (including 100 in Japan), and 1,500 other models are limited to 1,500 pieces each (including 300 in Japan).

The enamelware dial is characterized by the warm white and fresh luster that was also used in the first wristwatch made in Japan, Laurel. Enamelware craftsman Mitsuru Yokozawa carefully baked by hand, creating a glossy luster and unfading beauty.

Enamelware craftsman: Mitsuru Yokosawa
Fuji Enamelware Industry Co., Ltd. (joined in 1971) Technical advisor at Tsukuba Plant. A master craftsman with an eye for seeing through the finish in increments of only 0.01 mm on the coating surface. One of the leading craftsmen who can apply enamel to the delicately crafted dial Japan.

The lacquer dial was supervised by Kanazawa lacquer artist Kazufune Tamura, and by repeating painting and sharpening dozens of times, the beautiful cityscape of Kanazawa, which is nurtured by a unique sense of aesthetics, is expressed in glossy reddish-brown colors.

Lacquer artist: Isshu Tamura
Born in 1957 (Showa 32). Lives in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. After studying under Master Kiyose Ikko and mastering the traditional craft “Kaga Maki-e” handed down in Kanazawa, he created a unique meticulous technique that is unparalleled in the world. In addition to lacquerware, he also presented high-class fountain pens and watches decorated with Kaga Maki-e. The exquisite beauty of its extremely precise technology has been highly acclaimed worldwide.

In order to achieve the durability required for a watch, the Arita porcelain dial uses a reinforced porcelain material that is more than four times stronger than conventional watches. After a casting process using a high-precision mold, it undergoes a highly difficult process of firing at a high temperature of 1300°C.

Arita porcelain potter: Hiroyuki Hashiguchi
After joining Shin Kiln in 1983, he mastered careful and exquisite techniques and sophisticated dyeing, and received numerous awards, including the Minister of International Trade and Industry Award at the Kyushu Yamaguchi Ceramics Exhibition. In 1996, he was certified as a traditional craftsman with Imari and Arita ware underpainting.

The cloisonne dial is created by Mr. Wataru Toya, a glaze master of Owari Cloisonne, using a unique glaze that does not contain lead, and after repeated firing at about 800°C, it is then subjected to precise polishing.

Cloisonne Dial Glazer: Wataru Totani
Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1985 (Showa 60). After studying pottery manufacturing methods at Aichi Prefectural Seto Ceramics High School and getting a job at the Ando Cloisonne store, a long-established Owari Cloisonne store, he is striving to become a glaze master who is responsible for an important process called “glaze jug,” which is the basis of Owari Cloisonne’s technique.
