The 62MAS-010, commonly known as the “First Diver”, appeared in 1965 as the first full-scale diver’s watch made in Japan. Its iconic design is often incorporated as a motif in new works even today.
The SBDX053, which was released in February, is one of them. While following the characteristic design of the first diver’s short lugs and thickened indexes only at 6, 9 and 12 o’clock, the specs befitting a modern diver’s watch are given, such as the application of phosphorescent paint at 3 o’clock where the calendar window is located to comply with the ISO 6425 standard.
In addition, the sides of the case and the outer circumference of the bezel were polished, which is a polished primer. The undistorted mirror surface shines effectively as an accent that creates a sense of luxury in a satin-finished case. There are many watch brands that take the method of adding +α elements without faithfully reproducing old icon models, but there are very few that can be finished without feeling uncomfortable. Seiko’s “modern design” is an excellent example of a reprint model.
For many years, Seiko Prospex has been supporting three marine conservation activities: the PADI Marine Debris Program, which mainly aims to reduce marine debris, the National Institute of Polar Research, which conducts research on environmental change in Antarctica and the Arctic, and the Underwater Archaeology Research, which investigates underwater archaeological sites. SBDX053 is also a model for underwater archaeology research.
Specifically, a pattern with the motif of “astrolabe” was embossed on the dial. The astrolabe is an ancient astronomical instrument that determines the current latitude and time during navigation, and is also an artifact from archaeological sites that are the subject of underwater archaeological research.
In terms of warming up the old and learning about the new, underwater archaeology, which investigates underwater ruins, has in common a modern take on the first diver. It is a diver’s watch worthy of the word “warm and new”.
