The motif is a race car of yesteryear
The BMW 3.0 CSL is a special model developed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of BMW M (then BMW Motorsport), which oversees the company’s motorsport activities and the development of high-performance sports models. It was announced in November 2022. Limited to 50 units worldwide, it was sold at a price of 750,000 euros (about 120 million yen).
The design is based on the motif of the original “3.0 CSL”, which appeared in 1973 and won many touring car races at that time, and reproduces the image of the car called “Batmobile” with its original body parts and aerodynamic devices. In addition, by using CFRP in almost all bodywork, a significant weight reduction has been realized.
The engine to be installed is a 3-liter inline 6 gasoline turbo of the same system as the “M3/M4”, and by improving it exclusively for the same vehicle, it generates a maximum output of 560PS and a maximum torque of 550Nm. This is said to be the highest output ever for a straight-six engine installed in the M model for public roads. The only transmission that is combined is a three-pedal, six-speed MT.
The vehicle unveiled this time was purchased by Mr. Yasuaki Suzuki, chairman of Study and representative of the racing team “BMW Team Studie”. There seem to be various regulations on purchase and maintenance, and it was said that “modification is strictly prohibited, circuit driving is good, but use in racing is also prohibited.”
In addition, the official announcement of the 3.0 CSL was in November 2022, but as with these models, there was actually a private announcement in advance. When the concept model “3.0 CSL Homage” was announced in 2015, some customers seemed to be researching whether they would be interested in a car like this if it were commercialized.
Mr. Suzuki commented, “I placed an order for this car two and a half years ago, and I was introduced that this kind of car would come out in this way. It seems that there were about 500 applicants, so I mobilized all the connections I had so that I could be selected,” he joked. Next, he said, “It seems that I was recommended for the ‘motorsport slot,'” and that his contribution to BMW through racing activities may have led to the acquisition of the purchase quota.
As for my impression of driving the actual car, I said, “I also ride an M4 MT car, but the 3.0 CSL is much lighter. I want to get it running outside as soon as possible.”
