The design theme of the “M45” collection, which Orient Star launched in 2023, is “Subaru,” a star cluster that mysteriously colors the night sky. The “Mechanical Moon Phase” of the blue gradient dial, which was released in April last year, caused a sensation due to its novelty and sold out quickly. Following on from the popular model, this work has been finished with a gray gradient dial that has been further refined to a new level.
The dial, which is coated with a uniquely formulated paint using a dedicated gradient machine, develops a monotone gradation that changes from gray in the center to black on the outer periphery. The paint surface was covered with a thicker, more transparent wrapping paint than usual, representing the eternity of the universe. In addition, the myriad stars expressed in a delicate patterned pattern create a sparkling scene of the open star cluster “M45 (Subaru)” in the constellation Taurus, whose expression changes depending on the angle of entry.
In this way, the gray gradient dial, which was created by making full use of complex manufacturing processes and advanced technology, has a moon phase display that combines a power reserve display at 12 o’clock and a pointer-type date calendar at 6 o’clock. The display part has a two-piece structure that is considered to be a separate body.
The black indexes with Roman numerals matching the color of the outer periphery of the dial were created by multiple overlapping prints to create an exquisite three-dimensional effect and shading, and were finished to stand out from the background. The same is true for the hands, and the gray-plated hour and minute hands blend in with the night sky with a gray gradation, but are finished separately for mirror and streaked surfaces to ensure visibility. The high-quality stainless steel case is also black-plated, representing the night sky that has not changed since ancient times throughout the timepiece.
This work, which expresses the mysterious moon and star clusters in the abyss of the night sky, and gives a sense of “time” on a cosmic scale, can only be purchased at the official Orient Star online store and the Prestige Shop. The number of sales at the official online store “with ORIENT STAR” is 60 bottles and the price is 330,000 yen, and the 140 bottles sold at the prestige shop are priced at 341,000 yen with a cordovan replacement band. It is a rare model in which the serial number is engraved for each store.
