McLaren Automotive will introduce the GTS Signature Collection, a special edition car exclusively for the Japan market, which further sharpens the appeal of the rear-wheel drive Gran Turismo GTS equipped with a 4.0-liter V-8 twin-turbo engine, in a limited edition of 22 units.
Designed by Norman Foster, known for his works at Hong Kong International Airport and Tokyo’s Century Tower, the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) has been highly regarded for its forward-thinking architectural design. The essence of the design was “balance” and “harmony”. From above, the building and the lake form a perfect circle with yin and yang motifs. This shape was designed and used in the home button of the infotainment system on all models.
The water from the lake adjacent to the building is also functional, contributing to the large amount of heat released from the building’s air conditioning and wind tunnel experiments through heat exchangers. In addition, the internal structure of the building was also secured to promote cooperation while maintaining the independence of each department.
The GTS Signature Collection, which will be introduced exclusively in Japan, was developed as a model that reflects the unique design concept contained in the MTC. The four themes of “Howthorn”, “Paragon”, “Rotunda” and “Reflection” were each given its own special equipment, and expressed a tribute to McLaren’s home base, from the body color to the interior.
The exterior of the four themes was deliberately required to be modest. The body colors were developed for limited edition models, and each one has a unique story related to MTC. The wheels are also available in two colors for the first time in the GTS. The mirror housing is decorated with a delicate pattern that was also used in the MTC motif.
Various details inspired by “MCT”
Various details were adopted in each part of the interior, such as a fascia plate inspired by the McLaren Technology Center (MTC).
The interior further deepened its connection with MTC, and shapes extracted from architectural design were arranged in each part. The headrests are embroidered with the “MTC” logo, which is also used for infotainment buttons, to blend in with the seat fabric. On the fascia plate on the dashboard on the passenger side, the side silhouette of the MTC is beautifully highlighted by the backlight.
Turning to the fascia plate of the door lining, a part of the bird’s-eye view from MTC’s design drawings was cut out and designed, and sewn into it as a tonal stitch of the same color. From the overall atmosphere of the interior to the details, everything is finished to make you feel McLaren’s “home”.
Theme 1: Howthorn
The deep green metallic “Hawthorne” was adopted with the theme of the rich natural environment around the MTC.
The “Hawthorne” was inspired by the rich natural environment of the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC). The theme is named after the hawthorn trees that grow in clusters around the campus. The deep green metallic Hawthorne was given the effect of evoking the very environment that shapes McLaren’s philosophy.
This bespoke paint is a special specification that combines deep black with a vibrant green paint effect. Underfoot are paired with satin-finished GT silver 10-spoke turbine forged alloy wheels and graphite gray brake calipers.
The interior is made of custom-made almond white semi-aniline leather with an impressive tonal contrast stitch.
Theme 2: Paragon
“Paragon” adopts a beautiful Paragon Black exterior color.
“Paragon” is inspired by the tiles laid on MTC’s Boulevard. The “Paragon Black” paint used in the exterior color features a shimmering finish with silver metallic flakes, and is named after the project “Paragon” during MTC’s construction.
The satin-finished GT silver turbine forged wheels and graphite grey calipers express the beauty of the metal structure found in MTC’s architecture. It is said that it contrasts with the almond white semi-aniline leather in the interior to create an image of the contrast between light and shadow that envelops MTC.
Theme 3: Rotunda
Rotonda pays homage to the long corridor in the basement of the MCT and the circular entrance leading to it.
“Rotonda” is inspired by the long white corridor that spreads out on the basement floor of MTC and the circular entrance (Rotonda) that leads to it. The “Rotonda White” paint is a solid off-white color, expressing a clean atmosphere.
Dark palladium-finished turbine wheels and graphite grey calipers express the perfection of the gray tiles inside the building. The interior is made of Scoria gray semi-aniline leather with tonal stitching, highlighting the harmony between light and shadow.
Theme 4: Reflection
The interior of the “Reflection” features tonal stitching on the Scoria gray semi-aniline leather seats.
The “Reflection” design is inspired by the scene of the beautiful lake that symbolizes the McLaren Technology Center reflected on the glass façade of the building. The “Reflection Green” paint has a unique base that includes silver metallic flakes, and reproduces the reflection of sunlight on the surface of the water on the MTC’s glass architecture.
To emphasize the contrast with the body color, the wheels have a dark palladium finish. The interior features tonal stitching on the Scoria gray semi-aniline leather seats, expressing the craftsmanship through fine tailoring.
